After making matzo balls for the first time, I started to think about similar ways to make brothy or light soups more substantial.  With a little oil, flour, and seasonings of your choice, you can make these quick and easy dough balls to add some extra oomph to your appetizer or meal.  Enjoy!

Prep time: 1 minute

Cook time: 3 minutes

Ingredients:

  • 1 c whole wheat flour
  • about 1/2 c water
  • 1 1/2 tbsp oil (more for a deeper fry)
  • seasonings, to taste
  • lemon juice, to taste

Method:

Heat oil in a medium saucepan over medium heat.  Mix flour, water, and seasonings in a bowl until you get a sticky dough- you may have to play with the flour and water ratios a little.  Scoop a small amount of dough and roll into a ball using your fingers.  Drop the balls in the oil, flipping after a minute and a half. Spritz with freshly squeezed lemon juice. Serve in soup or on their own with sauce.

Yields about 8 balls
